Mission Honduras is an annual student led mission trip through the Tulane Catholic Center. We work with a Honduran mission group, Misioneros de Esperanza, in the mountains outside of San Pedro Sula, primarily to encounter and form relationships with the people living there and secondarily to assist with any specific projects the Misioneros de Esperanza have been working on. Students can apply for the trip in the fall semester.
Since Mission Honduras's founding in 2002, the format and vision for each trip has changed a lot! The biggest change has been a move away from physical labor projects (like building bridges or schools) and more to an emphasis on encounter, friendship, and solidarity. We hope this will create meaningful interactions based on reciprocity and partnership, as a opposed to a giver-receiver transaction. We have also moved towards having weekly formation meetings before and after the trip. Grounded in Catholic Social Teachings the meetings aim to provide an appropriate frame of reference for the trip and help participants understand our vision. Another current, and important, transition has been to include fundraising as a key component. The money fundraised will primarily support the efforts of the Misioneros de Esperanza and their specific projects and help students afford the trip. While we do not want to "throw money" at the people of Honduras, we want to support the concrete efforts of Misioneros de Esperanza to improve the lives of the people of El Merendón.
